What changes the price
- Many companies price per piece: a mattress and a box spring often count as two items.
- Landfills and transfer stations in many areas charge extra for mattresses, and some areas send them to recyclers instead.
- Several states, including California, Connecticut and Rhode Island, run mattress recycling programs funded by a fee paid when a mattress is sold, with free drop-off sites for residents.
- Stairs and very large beds (king, adjustable bases) take more labor.
How to save
- When you buy a new mattress, ask the store to haul the old one away; many do it free or for a small fee.
- If your state runs a mattress recycling program, use its free drop-off sites.
- Your city's bulk pickup may take mattresses (some require them to be wrapped in plastic).
- Donate what still works: Habitat for Humanity ReStores and local charities take furniture and appliances in good condition, and some pick up for free.
- Check your city's bulk-trash pickup before paying a hauler; many cities collect large items a few times a year at no extra charge.
