What changes the price
- Volume: most companies price by how much of the truck your items fill, from a minimum charge up to a full load. Ask how they measure it (often by eighths or quarters of the truck bed).
- Weight: dense material such as concrete, dirt, brick, roofing shingles or tile can hit a truck's weight limit before it's full, so many companies charge extra for it or quote it separately.
- Access and labor: stairs, long carries, tight hallways and items that must be taken apart all add time.
- Disposal fees: what the local landfill or transfer station charges per ton varies by area and is built into the price.
- Special items: mattresses, tires, paint, electronics and appliances that contain refrigerant often carry a surcharge because they have to go to a recycler.
How to save
- Get two or three quotes: published prices for the same load size vary a lot between companies in the same city.
- Combine everything into one visit; the minimum charge applies to every trip.
- Donate or sell what still works before the truck comes, so you pay for less volume.
- Donate what still works: Habitat for Humanity ReStores and local charities take furniture and appliances in good condition, and some pick up for free.
- Check your city's bulk-trash pickup before paying a hauler; many cities collect large items a few times a year at no extra charge.
